Digital Nomad Taxation in Turkey: A Complete Guide for 2025

Turkey remains an appealing destination for digital nomads worldwide. While advertisements often highlight its beautiful climate, rich history, diverse culture, delicious cuisine, and vibrant vocational areas, the real hidden gem is its favorable taxation system.

The Turkish government has introduced regulations that offer digital nomads significant tax advantages. In this blog, we will explore the benefits and conditions digital nomads should be aware of before moving to Turkey.

Requirements to Become a Digital Nomad in Turkey

To qualify as a digital nomad in Turkey, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria:

  • Age: Between 21 and 55 years old.

  • Passport: Must have a passport valid for at least six months.

  • Education: Must present a university diploma or equivalent proof of graduation.

  • Income: Must prove a minimum monthly income of USD 3,000 or an annual income of USD 36,000.

  • Employment/Independent Contract: Must submit a valid employment or independent contract with a company outside of Turkey.

Digital Nomads with an Independent Contract

The tax situation becomes slightly more complex for digital nomads with independent contracts:

  • Subparagraph 23/14-a of Income Tax Law No. 193 stipulates that wages earned outside Turkey and paid in foreign currency are income tax-exempt, but only under employment contracts, not independent contracts.

  • Independent contractors are subject to self-employment tax regulations.

Key Cautions for Independent Contractors:

  • No Involvement with Turkey:
The foreign company must not engage in activities related to Turkey.

    Example:
Designing brochures for a British company promoting aesthetic clinics in Istanbul could trigger taxation.

  • No Reference to Turkey:
Contracts mentioning Turkey, the Middle East, or Anatolia may jeopardize tax exemptions.

  • Avoid Consultancy Contracts:
Contracts labeled as "consulting" are generally subject to taxation.
It's better to frame services under titles like "creative services," "IT services," or "design services."

Sectors Eligible for Tax Benefits

Turkey offers generous tax advantages (between 50% and 80%) for certain service sectors when serving foreign clients:

Eligible Sectors
Software Development
Data Storage and Processing
Cyber Security Services
Architecture and Engineering
Design and Creative Services
Accounting and Call Center Services

Additionally, young entrepreneurs under the age of 29 may benefit from further tax reductions.

How to Benefit from the Tax Advantages

To fully benefit from Turkey's tax exemptions:

  1. Open a Turkish Company:
Digital nomads with independent contracts should establish either a sole proprietorship or a limited liability company (LLC).

  2. Accept Payments in Foreign Currency:
Every invoice must be issued and paid in foreign currency even if prepared in TRY.

  3. Use a Turkish Bank Account:
Payments should be directed to a Turkish bank account to comply with the regulations.

  4. Ensure Services Are for Foreign Markets:
Services should clearly target foreign markets and not be linked to activities in Turkey.

Conclusion: Turkey’s Tax Advantages for Digital Nomads

Turkey offers exceptional tax opportunities for digital nomads:

  • 0% tax on salaries paid under the right employment conditions.

  • 50% to 80% tax reductions for certain service sectors.

  • Additional advantages for young entrepreneurs under 29.

Besides its fascinating cultural and natural beauty, Turkey’s tax policies can be a decisive factor for digital nomads considering their next destination.
If you meet the criteria and structure your contracts carefully, you can enjoy one of the most tax-friendly digital nomad lifestyles in the world.
