Spain Digital Nomad Visa: Basic Requirements and Eligibility

The Spain Digital Nomad Visa is a type of residence permit aimed at foreigners who wish to work remotely for companies located outside of Spain or who are self-employed. This visa offers eligible applicants the opportunity to live and work in Spain.

Basic Requirements and Who Can Apply:

In order to apply for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa, the following basic requirements generally need to be met:

  • Location of Employer or Clients: The applicant must be working for one or more companies located outside of Spain or, as a freelancer, must derive a significant portion of their income from individuals or entities located outside of Spain. Freelancers may also work for companies located in Spain, provided that this work does not exceed 20% of their total activity.

  • Remote Work Capability: The work to be performed must be fully capable of being carried out remotely through the exclusive use of computer, telematic, or telecommunication means.

  • Duration of Work Relationship:

    • For employed workers: The applicant must have been working for their current employer for at least three months at the time of application and must have obtained explicit authorization from the company to work remotely. Additionally, the employer company must have been in operation for at least one year. The employment contract is expected to be for at least 1 year.

    • For self-employed workers: The applicant must have an ongoing business relationship with at least one company or employer located outside of Spain for at least three months and this contract must authorize remote work.

  • Education or Experience: The applicant must possess a graduate or postgraduate degree from prestigious universities, vocational training centers, or renowned business schools, or must demonstrate a minimum professional experience of three years in their current field of work. The experience must be related to the remote work to be performed and of an equivalent nature.

  • Criminal Record: The applicant must prove that they have no criminal record that would prevent their entry into Spain within the last five years. Applicants over the age of 18 must present the original and a copy of the criminal record certificate issued by the country or countries of residence in the last 2 years. Additionally, a responsible declaration of not having a criminal record in the last five years must be provided. This document should generally be no more than 3 months old and may need to be apostilled.

  • Financial Means: The applicant must demonstrate that they possess sufficient economic resources to support themselves and their family members. As of 2025, the determined minimum monthly income requirement is twice the Spanish Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI), which amounts to 2,762 Euros. The applicant must show additional income for dependent family members. For the first family member, at least 75% of the SMI (approximately 1,035.99 Euros), and for each additional family member, at least 25% of the SMI (approximately 345.33 Euros) of additional income must be declared. Documents such as bank statements must prove the ownership, legality, and availability of the funds used as evidence.

  • Health Insurance: The applicant is required to have public or private health insurance contracted with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain that is valid in Spain. The insurance must cover all risks insured by the public health system in Spain. If an international Social Security agreement exists and covers temporary healthcare services in Spain, a certificate of coverage rights issued by the competent institution of the country in which the Social Security system is insured may be presented instead of health insurance.

  • Passport: The applicant must have a passport that is valid for at least one year and has two blank pages. Passports issued more than 10 years ago are not accepted.

  • NIE Number: The applicant must apply for a Foreigner Identification Number (NIE) at the same time as the visa application.

  • Application Form and Fee: A completely filled out and signed national visa application form must be submitted, and the visa application fee must be paid. Fees may vary according to the current exchange rate.

  • Proof of Residence: The visa applicant must demonstrate their legal residence in the country where the application is being submitted. Proof of accommodation in Spain must also be provided.

  • Proof of Work Relationship Documents: Employed workers need to provide a certificate from the company indicating seniority (at least three months) and explicit authorization for remote work, along with the company's establishment date (at least one year) from the Commercial Register. Self-employed workers need to provide a certificate showing the duration of the contractual relationship (at least three months) and the terms of remote work. A responsible declaration from the company or self-employed worker committing to social security obligations is also required. Employed workers need to show evidence of the company's registration with the Spanish Social Security and the worker's affiliation. Self-employed workers need to show evidence of affiliation with the RETA (self-employed workers' regime).

Who Can Apply (Summary):

  • Non-EU or EEA citizens.

  • Those capable of working remotely and who meet the aforementioned work relationship conditions.

  • Those with the necessary education or work experience.

  • Those with sufficient financial resources.

  • Those with a clean criminal record.

  • Those with valid health insurance in Spain.

Individuals who meet these conditions and submit the required documents completely can apply for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa. The visa application is usually submitted to the Spanish Consulate in the applicant's country of residence or, if already in Spain, directly to the relevant authorities. If applying from within Spain, the application must be made within the first 90 days of a tourist visa.
