Tax Exemption for Social Media Content Creators: Who Does It Include Now? A Comprehensive Guide
The scope of the tax exemption for social media content creators has been expanded to include many income-generating activities via the internet, as well as mobile app developers. This adjustment brings a new wave of opportunities for creators to simplify their financial processes.
Updated: February 22, 2025
At first glance, the title of this regulation may suggest that only the income from social media creators' activities is covered. However, the new regulation actually applies to many areas of income earned via the internet. The decree published on September 26, 2024, in the Official Gazette clarified the previously uncertain aspects.
What is the Tax Exemption for Social Media Content Creators?
In simple terms, the Tax Exemption for Social Media Content Creators allows you to earn income from specific activities without the need to form a company. The exemption system automatically deducts 15% tax from the income you receive in your bank account, ensuring your taxes are paid without any hassle.
What You Don't Have to Worry About:
No need to form a company
No need to issue invoices
No need to pay VAT
No need to track your expenses
No need to file tax returns
No need for monthly accounting services
What You Do Have to Do:
Pay 15% tax, automatically deducted from your bank account.
If you are not employed elsewhere, pay Bağkur (Social Security) contributions.
This exemption has also opened doors for other income streams that were not initially included, such as cybersecurity specialists, white hackers earning through sites like Bug Bounty, and music creators earning through platforms like DistroKid.
How to Apply for the Tax Exemption:
The application process is straightforward:
Apply online via the 193rd Article, Repeated 20/B of the relevant law.
After approval, you will receive a confirmation letter online.
Open a digital business account at the bank (often labeled as "Digital Business" or similar).
Report your account number to the tax office via the Interactive Tax Office.
15% of your income will be automatically deducted from your account.
Is There a Revenue Cap?
Yes, there is an upper limit. For 2025, your total income (i.e., the amount deposited into your bank account) cannot exceed 4,300,000 TRY.
For instance:
- If you earn 4,300,000 TRY, 15% of that will be 645,000 TRY in taxes, leaving you with 3,655,000 TRY.
For comparison:
As an employee, you'd pay 1,254,983.92 TRY in taxes.
As a sole proprietor, you'd pay 1,410,000 TRY in taxes.
The cap is updated annually, and it is expected to rise to around 5,600,000 TRY by 2026.
Can You Still Earn While Working for a Company?
Yes, you can still earn income in this way, and if you're employed, you won't need to pay Bağkur (social security) since your employer already covers it.
